Have an unforgettable summer in Sweden! Come to Hälsingland in the most beautiful time of year when the sun never wants to set and the music never wants to stop – play music and make friends for life.
Hälsinge Låtverkstad has been involved in a prize winning international Leader-project called SNAP in which young musicians from Sweden, Northumbria (England) And Ploërmel (France) met and shared their musical traditions and of course created great crossovers. This network has expanded and are now including Finland. We now arrange our second Folk Summer School in Sweden inspired by Folkworks Summer School in England.
This year there will be instrumental workshops, but there will of course be plenty of opportunities for dancing and singing on and off workshop hours.
You should not be a beginner to your instrument – all instruments that you can carry are welcome – and you should be accustomed to learning by ear. You should be between 13 and 23 years of age.
Tutors
The teachers are all eminent performers and also experienced tutors.
Marianne Maans, supreme singer and fiddler from Österbotten, composer and tutor for folk arts for children and folk music for choirs. She also plays the unusual instrument “stringharp” – exciting. http://www.cdroots.com/sf-maans.html
Stewart Hardy, fabulous fiddler from Northumberland, England, has been touring with many bands all over the world playing traditional folk, pop, country, rock, jazz and western swing music. Besides writing, composing, recording he now teaches on the Folk Degree at Newcastle University. http://www.myspace.com/stewarthardy
Martin Coudroy, miraculous melodeon player from Brittany who is especially interested in music for dancing. He knows Sweden well. Besides his many tutorial skills he is also on the road touring with his different bands. http://www.myspace.com/martincoudroytrio
Colorado musician Ryan Drickey's influences range from the 20th century classical virtuoso tradition to the rural old-time fiddling of Appalachia, to the intricate dance rhythms of Scandinavian fiddle music. He won the Rockygrass fiddle contest in 2007. Equally at home teaching group classes or individuals, he maintains a small private teaching studio in Boulder and regularly leads fiddle classes around the country with students of all ability levels.
